The why

Why every day matters

From the founder of Church Connector

When you're learning to read the Bible, don't get hung up on what you don't understand. You will read it again and again, because there is that much depth in it.

For a long time I read 2 Timothy 4:13, where Paul asks Timothy to bring his cloak and his books, "especially the parchments," and I had no idea why it was there. Then, a little at a time, I learned. First, that Paul wrote thirteen of the letters in the New Testament. Later, that those thirteen letters aren't in the order he wrote them. This one was his last.

When I picture it now, I don't see a man with a chain on his wrist. Rome kept prisoners in a hole in the ground. I see a man alone in the dark, maybe barely able to see, cold, his race nearly run. We don't know all of it. But from there he wrote, "I suffer hardship to the point of chains as a criminal. But God's word isn't chained." And he asked for two things: something to keep him warm before winter, and something to study. When that hit me, I wept.

You can't walk through the Bible without moments like that, because it is written that way. You won't catch them every time, and you aren't meant to. A line that seems ordinary today can turn out to be beautiful, and you just don't know it yet.

If you're new, you won't see that for months or years, and that's okay. That's why the Daily Read matters. Nobody becomes a teacher of the Bible in a semester. You get there the way you learn anything deeply: a little every day, for the rest of your life.

"They received the word with all readiness of mind, examining the Scriptures daily."

Acts 17:11

"Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that each person who belongs to God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."

2 Timothy 3:16-17

Scripture quoted from the World English Bible.

The resource

One resource, many ways to use it

The Daily Read bends to the person and to the church. Use as much or as little of it as fits your season.

Start with one chapter

Every day begins with one New Testament chapter, about five minutes. That alone is a day in the Word.

Read the whole Bible in a year

One tap adds an Old Testament chapter, then more. Read all four each day and you finish the Bible in a year, with the New Testament and Psalms twice. The plan is Robert Murray M'Cheyne's from 1842.

Follow your pastor

A pastor can set any day's passages and write an intro, so the Daily Read follows what he is teaching through the year. If he sets nothing, the plan carries on by itself.

Listen when you can't sit down

Every chapter has a recorded reading of the World English Bible. Pick the chapter you want and it plays from there, in the car or on a walk.

Write it down

A journal on your phone, with SOAP prompts if they help: Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer. Talk into it or type.

Mark it for later

Flag a note "Research later" when a verse raises a question you want to dig into another day. Your marked notes are easy to find again.

See your days

A calendar shows the days you read. Only the chapters you check off count, never what you only played or scrolled past.

Everything in one place

Your reading, your notes and your prayer journal live together on your phone. We count that you read, never what you wrote.

The roots

The roots of the tree

On our home page, Church Connector grows like a tree: the shepherd is the trunk, every group is a branch, and the fruit is people who know their Bible and know each other. The Daily Read is in the roots, because everything feeds from the Word.

A pastor feeds the flock. A small group leader feeds a few. The Daily Read gives both something to feed from every day of the week, not only Sunday. The chapter a member reads on Tuesday can be the chapter the group talks about on Wednesday and the clue in that week's Weekly Dig.

We aren't trying to grow the world. We're growing community in it: a church, a small group, a youth group, a few friends around one table. That is why everything here is built for groups. Every church on Church Connector reads the same chapter on the same day unless its pastor chooses another, so a family and their small group can be in the same passage the same morning, and the conversation has already started when they meet.

See how the whole tree fits together

"Feed my sheep."
